This is one of the most delightful day trips anywhere....and it's "winter fun" because that's when the Bald Eagles of the upper midwest go south for their food supply. Feeding almost entirely on fish, when the rivers ice over up north, the eagles come south, and they follow that edge pretty closely. They aren't really migrating....they are following their food supply. The best eagle watching therefore, in our area, is after a prolonged cold spell. Of course, this is a subject so huge, our knowledge so limited, that we can't begin to be the end-all commentary. So we've chosen to list some of the principles of (call it "advanced amateur") bird feeding in SW Illinois that we've learned or heard of...and we hope to hear from you, too about your tweaks on the subject. (And what's the name of this bird, photographed in Edwardsville? Answer below.)
